The Institute of Emerging Agricultural Technology (IEAT) of Shenzhen University of Advanced Technology (SZUAT) was established in November 2024, with Professor Yang Zhenbiao, an internationally renowned plant biologist, serving as its director. The Institute focuses on key food crops, economic plants, agricultural microorganisms, and the field of green agricultural biomanufacturing. It applies the principles of synthetic biology and advanced manufacturing science to research and develop disruptive future agricultural technologies, realize the transformation and industrialization of these technologies, help address food security issues, and cultivate a new generation of innovative agricultural scientists, engineers, and entrepreneurs. The Institute aims to become the world’s first institute dedicated to future agriculture, a benchmark institution for international future agricultural technology research, leading the research and development of future agriculture, and serving food security and the sustainable development of green agriculture.

The Institute’s key research directions include:

  1. Breeding of crops with high photosynthetic efficiency and high protein content;

  2. Research on plant stress resistance mechanisms and innovation in crop cultivation on saline-alkali land;

  3. Development of new protein and oil sources based on microalgae and duckweed;

  4. Industrial R&D of functional plants (e.g., strawberries) and microalgae;

  5. Exploration of the development model for next-generation standardized, modular, digital, and intelligent protected agriculture; and the construction of a full-process innovation ecosystem covering basic research, applied research, and achievement transformation.

The Institute has built a research team led by international top scholars and national-level talents, supported by young outstanding talents. Currently, the Institute has 1 provincial-level Pearl River Talent Team, 1 foreign academician jointly appointed with the School of Synthetic Biology, 4 recipients of national high-level talent programs, 3 recipients of national-level young talent programs, and 4 reserved academic backbones with outstanding professional capabilities. In terms of organizational support, there are 4 administrative staff members who systematically carry out full-process support work such as personnel management, financial operations, research support, and achievement transformation.
